After I read this, I wanted to give myself a hug. So I did.
In 2006, actor Stephen Fry received a letter from a girl struggling with depression. This was his response.
This is why Stephen Fry is one of my heroes.
A fantastic human being.
You’ve probably seen this, but you also probably can’t see it enough.
When Stephen had his mental breakdown in 1995 and went missing for a while, I found his email address and wrote to him. Told him how I supported him and hoped he’d find his way. I mentioned that I was once in the front row of a studio audience for “A Bit of Fry and Laurie”, and in between takes, he stared and me and smiled. He wrote back and said, and I paraphrase, “Perhaps it’s because I could tell you were such a lovely person…” This was during one of the darkest moments of his life. He left a play on the West End. He had been hospitalized and laid low for a while. So, this email from my idol, across the ocean, when email was a new-ish thing, was a ray of Fry sunshine beaming out from the eye of his storm. It’s another reason to adore the lovely Mr. Fry. A Humanist and sweet man if ever there was one.
